My Journey to Life Master
by Betsy Ovitt
I am quite pleased to achieve Life Master as I never intended to get it when I started…especially since points are awarded in hundredths of fractions.
Here is how I got started…
My father was playing duplicate bridge with his buddy in Wisconsin. After my mother died, my brother told Dad that he needed to be where one on the “kids” lived. So he called me and said he was coming to Colorado, where I was living. So I called the director of the duplicate club to get him a partner, which I found someone who was difficult to pair.. When Dad arrived, in 1997, I told him that I found a partner for him…The fellow has Parkinson’s, Dad didn’t care, he is a retired physician. He is little off-putting, Dad didn’t care. He has 700 Masterpoints -where Dad said..”You play with me.” So he bought me Eddie Kantor’s “Bridge for Dummies” book and said, “That’s all you need to know.”
So off we went to the bridge club where I immediately pointed to the bidding box and said, “What’s that??” He signed me up for ACBL and we played in local tournaments and at the club. It has taken me a long time to get my points since I was working and really didn’t play too much after my father died in 2006. But, after I retired in 2011, Joyce and I have been playing and the points kept coming, so I did go to some tournaments in order to achieve my LM.
If I can do it, anyone can!!
