After 38 years in higher education, Bill Pearman retired as Chancellor of the University of Hawaii West Oahu. Among his goals for life’s next chapter was more travel. It was on a cruise that inquisitiveness caused him to ask, “What are people doing in that big room all day, every day?”
They were playing bridge. Maybe that would be fun to learn, and so the journey began. Yet today, he is reminded how he and 3 others with a combined masterpoint total of less than 5 registered to play in a knockout at a Hawaii Regional.
Embarrassed, but wiser, he vowed to continue to learn this game..
He combined travel and bridge, and many trips to mainland tournaments eventually led to the rank of Life Master. Along the way, he passed the ACBL Director’s test, obtained Cruise Director certification, and started his own club, Oahu Bridge Players. Since COVID, he has directed that club’s games online every Friday and Saturday at 9 AM Hawaii time.
