Review Your Convention Card

By Susie Leo, I/N Coordinator

As the days get shorter and darkness arrives earlier, we tend to hunker down inside more.

Some say it is a time for reflection and slowing down. So, let’s take advantage of these

quiet hours to improve our bridge game. Here is one idea: Convention card review!

Whether you play with one main partner with one convention card, or you play the field

and have many cards, take a moment to truly look at every agreement you have

with your partners. Here are some examples.

~Look for places where you tend to get confused. Is it Defense Against Notrump?

Because there are so many options, decide which one you and your partner truly like and

understand.

~Are your signals clear? Do you use Standard, UDCA, or something else? What

is your agreement for your first discard?

~What bids are forcing? What if there is interference?

~What is your response if your partner makes a Simple Overcall?

You get the picture. Look at and discuss every item on your convention card with

your partner. It can be quite fun and revealing. Understanding your agreements will help you be a better bridge player, score more points, and make you smile.

So, let’s enjoy this great game of bridge all winter long! It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Happy Holidays!

Susie
