Oregon Trail Regional Intermediate/Newcomers

by Sheri Markwardt

Despite the unfavorable weather during the Oregon Trail Regional, there were many highlights for the week including the Intermediate/Newcomer (I/N) events.

● Donna Compton and David Brower hosted the lecture series at the Regional and attracted a sizable group of I/N players.

● David Brower offered his Learn to Play Bridge series, but it was cut in half due to the ice and snow. The series of 4 lessons teaches rubber bridge with minimal conventions allowing students to fall in love with the game and play at home with friends and family.

● On Tuesday night, the Vancouver Bridge Club sponsored a supervised play game in between the second and third sessions. Three tables were in attendance.

● On Wednesday night, 6 local teachers braved the winter weather to hear ideas about how to attract and groom bridge students. They shared thoughts with each other and Jackie Zayac, ACBL Regional Director for Region 12 and Don Marsh D20 president.

● On Saturday there was a 4 table 0-20er game with several people playing in their first tournament. Cameron Smith and Ronnie Johnston took first place with a score of 73.76.

Also scoring points were partners Lonnie and Tammy Barron, partners Alison Johnson and Paula Heimberg and partners James Petersen and Samuel Oberg.

● The 0-199er swiss team took place on Sunday and hosted three tables. The team of Edward and Ly Kondrot, Bruce Dishman and Jonathan Harvey took home the honors of placing first.

During the I/N events, players were asked to sign-up their teachers for a drawing to play an online session with one of three professionals who attended the event. Over 50 responses were received with Kevin Marnell being selected to play with Roger McNay, David Castles was selected to play Mark Itabashi, and Joy Fletcher was selected to play with John Ashton.
