President’s Corner

October 2024

Once again, the Seaside Regional did not disappoint. Nearly perfect weather and a superbly run tournament made for a great experience. Thanks to Tournament Manager Jim Wheeler for pulling all the right strings and making all the tough calls. Jim’s career as a TM for D20 is nearing its end and if this was Jim’s swan song, well, he hit all the right notes, including the hard-to-reach high ones.

Matt Koltnow and his directing crew were outstanding, as always. I took a day off from playing to shadow Matt as he made his rulings around the room. I came away, once again, so impressed with the depth of knowledge and level of commitment all the directors put in to ensuring that we have a well-run event.

Susie Leo, our Intermediate-Newcomer coordinator, is continuing to put her stamp on this position in new and innovative ways and it is indeed a welcome breath of fresh air. The lessons she lined up with Dr. Bob Johnson were outstanding and very well-attended.

McKenzie Myers certainly deserves a shout-out for the panel he put together with some of the best players in the world. It was excellent.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the effort put forth by Sam Asai as partnership chair. Talk about a “thank-less job!!!” So let me say, “Thanks, Sam!”

The District Board met after the second session on Thursday and among the items handled was the election of our next president. It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I can share with you that Allision Evans from Corvallis was elected, and her two-year term will start January 1, 2025. I can think of no better person, and we are extremely fortunate that Allison has stepped up and agreed to serve. Welcome, Allision and thank you.

It is time to submit names of any individuals that you think merit consideration for the Goodwill Committee and Charity Committee. Please forward to me the names of any individuals you think worthy of this recognition.

The district is beginning the process of looking for folks to serve as Tournament Mangers for the Oregon Coast Regional in Seaside, The Oregon Trail Regional in Vancouver, and the High Desert Regional in Redmond-Bend. These are compensated positions. If you think you might be interested, please contact me.

In my next column or two, I will share with you the things your board has accomplished in the past three years and an idea or two on issues that face the district as we move forward.

Thanks for reading,

Don Marsh
