Romy Gursa – Diamond Life Master

Romy Gursa of Boise, Idaho recently reached Diamond Life Master. Congratulations Romy!

Here is his bridge story:

I was born in Denver and played bridge from a young age as my parents and grandparents also played bridge. I have played duplicate for so long that the ACBL does not know when I started. When they invented red points, I didn’t need any.

I was fascinated by the game and by the fact that you could play famous players as a beginner.

In the middle of all this I caddied for spending money.   Favorite Director was Max Hardy.

At a Summer National I was on the team that represented Denver in the city-to-city competition (I think with Boston); viewgraph by Tanah Hirsch.

I played in a Denver Post total points tournament and qualified to go see the ACES play the Italian Blue Team in Las Vegas.

In my 20s I was elected to the Denver Unit Board. And I was president during the Nationals. My Father had been president before me.

Moved to Alaska for a job in the mid-eighties. Cut back on bridge but managed a few regional wins.Tried some OK Bridge with Denver players. Computers were a little clunkier than.

Moved later to Wichita in the mid-nineties. Low level of bridge until retirement but then managed a few sectional wins.

Moved to Boise to be around family in 2020 just before COVID. After we were settled, started playing online in May. Have played with old friends from Denver (Dave Cowen and Jim Miller).

Thanks,
Romy
