The 75th Annual Seaside Tournament had roots in 1948

A pair of duplicate bridge events were reported in the Thursday, April 8th, 1948 edition of the
Seaside Signal weekly newspaper. Thanks to Ruth Johnson for investigating these stories
which were in the bound collection of the newspaper in the Seaside Public Library.

 

Ten Tables Take Part in a Preliminary Event March 24th prior to the Bridge Tourney

“A fine turnout was reported for the complimentary duplicate bridge tournament held
Wednesday night March 24 at the Hotel Seaside, according to Mrs. Annabelle Yates.

Ten tables took part in Wednesday night’s play which was held as a preliminary event to the duplicate bridge tournament to be held at the hotel April 10 and 11 under the sponsorship of the Seaside Chamber of Commerce.

North and south winners were: Mrs. Don York and Mrs. W. H. Lankford; second, Mrs.
John Royce and Mrs. J. L. Hermann; third, Mrs. O.O. Rudig and Mrs. H. E. Jaggar. East
and west winners included, first, Mrs. James Laughlin and Mrs. A. R. Wascher; second,
Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Firebaugh, and third, O. O. Budig and R. H. Valentine.

A great deal of interest is being shown in the tournament to be held April 10 and 11,
Mrs. Yates states, and the event is open to the public. Committee for the coming
tournament, of which Mrs. O. O. Rudig is chairman, including Mrs. P. J. MacAuley, Mrs.
Schafer, Mrs. John Royce, Mrs. J. Hermann, Mrs. Eino Niemi, Mrs. Mitchell Thorn, Mrs.
H. E. Jaggar and Mrs. William Neiding.”

Duplicate Bridge Tourney to Be Weekend Event

“Seaside will be host to a group of bridge enthusiasts this weekend when the first
annual complimentary duplicate bridge tournament takes place Saturday and Sunday at
the Hotel Seaside.

Sponsored by the Oregon division of the American Contract Bridge league, the
tournament will feature three divisions: a mixed pair championship at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday; a ladies’ pair and men’s pair at 8 p. m. Saturday, and an open pair
championship event Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Advance reservations indicate that an attendance of at least a hundred is assured,
according to R. N. Williams, manager of the Hotel Seaside.

Mrs. Annabell Yates who is in charge of the tournament, states that a special meeting
will be held Sunday at 12:30 o’clock at the hostel, to which all bridge players are invited.
Purpose of the meeting will be to form a bridge league to insure the holding of the
tournament at Seaside annually. Speakers at the meeting will be Max Manchester and
C. W. Johnson, both of Portland, directors of the American Contract Bridge League.
